Thai Food
Thai food, like Thai culture, is the product of various influences that blend together to form one distinctive cuisine.

Ordinary fare in Sukhothai and early Ayutthaya was simple with mainly fish or meat (fresh and dried) which is mixed with rice, vegetables, a few spices and salty sauce made from fermented fish or shrimp. Other ingredients and flavours came through increased contact with foreign cultures like China and India in particular but also from Europe.

Even in the rather grand households a Thai meal is an informal affair. Streamed rice forms the centrepiece - which is loose grained in most parts of the country but glutinous in the north and northeast of Thailand. The other dishes are placed around the rice in any order of preference but this is usually some kind of curry, a soup, a spiced salad, etc. and then the meal is finished with Thai desert or fruit.
